You remember him with very dak hair, you image him like a dark and closed guy. Instead Lauri Ylonen, singer and leader of The Rasmus, presented to the meeting with Rockol with blonde hairs, in a nice mood and well-disposed to talk about the last creature of his band: the new album “Black Roses”.
Three years has passed from the last studio work of the finnish band (“Hide from the sun”) and in this time many things has happened in the life of the band. “After the promotional tour of our last album we felt so much the need to stop and understand who we were. After a regenerative break, we knew that we wanted to do something original and it wasn’t easy to understand what direction to take”. A precious help came without any doubts from the prestigious producer Desmond Child (Kiss, Poison, Alice Cooper, Bon Jovi, Joss Stone): “It was incredible to work with him, a person that made the history of rock and pop, in particular in the ’80. Everything has started through colleagues that send to Desmond some emails asking him if he knew us. He answered that adored out sound and from there it all began. Incredible, for us it was like win the lottery. Desmond helped us a lot for risk, and we wanted again to make music and have fun making it”.
“Black Roses” has been recorded mainly in Child’s recording studio in Nashville (Usa), but also in Finland (where the band owns a recording studio) and in the most disparate places like Singapore, Berlin, Stockholm and Greece. “Before define the production with Desmond, we started to record something at Pauli’s studio in Singapore, where he lives. Then while we were in other places of the world we’ve been light up with an idea: so we booked a recording studio for some days and wrote down everything. A very spontaneous way to work, but also very expensive.”
The black roses from where the album’s title was taken can be viewed like a contrast symbol and Lauri confirm it: “The title of the album born from the conflict from a symbol of love like the rose and a dark colour like the black: let’s say that it can represent a bad ended love relationship. Beside this, the name is a tribute to our fans that often while gigs they throw us this kind of flower: we wanted to return the favour”. In this new The Rasmus’ work the tracks seems to have a more pop-rock mark than in the past. “Actually ‘Black Roses’ has a more pop attitude, we used a lot the keyborads and digital sounds, thanks also to the listen of big names of this kind of music like Depeche Mode and Cure. Obviously the dark component isn’t missing, in particular in the lyrics, but maybe there’s less than in the past”.
The past and that world wide succesful hit indeed. It was the 2003 and The Rasmus break through with “In The Shadows”. “When one of your songs has a world wide success you are obviously happy. At the same time we have the bad habit to can’t say no, so we played this song and indefinite number of times. We were exhausted, but after a right break today our relation with it is good”.
Lauri decided to keep living in Finland (“I live in a small city near Helsinki, an ideal place to be quiet and enjoy the nature”), but he’s ready to face the future and the coming of a new tour. “We’ll start to play in January and if everything goes well we should be in Italy by February”.
