He can put on three pairs of sunglasses, a cap and paranja but anyway it’s impossible not to recognize Lauri. On this interview with Bravo Lauri has come almost like this, but without crow feathers.
Interview begins by candlelight in B1 club, where all preparations for a concert are in progress and now technicians are setting up a light. Lauri in a good mood and full of enthusiasm to answer all the questions together with bassist Eero Heinonen who now sits in a posture of lotus on a VIP-table in a VIP-zone of club.
Bravo: Hi guys! You here again as if you didn’t leave anywhere. Looks like you visit Moscow more often then the other cities.
Lauri: Yeah… We’ve been here for the first time in 1996 … or 1998?
Eero: in 1996
Lauri: Yeah, there was an exchange program of musicians between Russia and Finland, we came to Russia and someone from Russia came to Finland. It was the first time we played in St. Petersburg… Then we came to Russia once again together with HIM, and now our big tour has just finished.
Eero: Russia is very close to Finland, one, two, three and we’re here.
Bravo: And how it’s being here? Did you like it?
Eero: We were very intrigued. I still can’t believe that we have visited cities with such funny names as Ufa and Yek-ka-terinburg
Bravo: You must be speaking Russian very well?
Lauri: Ha-ha no! I still need an interpreter. But I know word “spitski”! I learned this word 10 years ago when I needed to light a cigarette and nobody had a lighter. And I was walking and asking everybody “spitski” but nobody had.
Bravo: How do you entertain yourselves while you’re on tour?
Lauri: Today we got a busy day; we’re preparing to a concert and then will play a show. And tomorrow we will have time and we want to walk and to go to a museum. How it’s called?
Eero: I don’t remember … a museum with animals
Bravo: Zoo?
Eero: No, there aren’t living animals; there are skeletons of mammoths and dinosaurs.
Bravo: Are you a fan of dinosaurs?
Eero (confused): No, we’ve been told that it’s very interesting and nice there. And it is worth to go there.
Lauri: Yes, and also I want to watch paintings and to go the museum. Or to watch street artists! When we were on Arbat I was astonished that there are a lot of artists sitting on the street and drawing portraits.
Bravo: And of course you ordered a portrait of yours?
Lauri: No! We were just watching them. Who wants to hang up at home a picture of your own face?
Bravo: And what kind of paintings you would hang up at home? Landscape?
Eero (interrupting): I know what picture I would hang up at my place, I’ve seen it in Moscow! It was a picture of an old man playing guitar with the glass of wine standing near him on a table. That man was very sad, it was clear that he’s been through a lot of things…
Lauri: I like when there is a mystery in the picture… well, the main thing is that there wouldn’t be some kind of bowl with fruits! You know what I mean.
Bravo: Let’s talk about girls! They adore you! Have you ever had a problem because of this?
Lauri: Not yet. But sometimes we’re surprised with the fans! In Russia they’re recognize us on the street, come to us the whole crowd, asking autographs. They can spend hours at the railway station only to meet us!
Bravo: Does it bother you?
Eero: Of course not! Most of the guys dream about girls screaming in raptures and longing to touch you!
Lauri: Of course sometimes there are some moments when you want to be left alone, to play guitar, concentrate… But in tour girl’s attention just can’t bother! They’re necessary for us like musical instruments, without them nothing would turn out.
Bravo: In your hometown fans also chase you on streets?
Eero: People in Suomi more restrained and calm. Even if they recognized you they won’t come to you, they would stay aside and whisper: “Have you seen that guy from The Rasmus?”. And here fans want to tear you to pieces.
Bravo: How do you spend your time in Helsinki?
Eero: In summer here in Helsinki are many pleasant places, zoo or amusement park for example! We like to go there, there are always many people and everybody have fun.
Lauri: When I have free time I like to sit at home and write new songs… I need it like air. Certainly it’s good to be famous but sometimes it is necessary to be alone.
Bravo: Do you remember songs you were performing in 1994 when The Rasmus have just started?
Lauri: Ha-ha! Of course we do, they are naive but we still love them. Sometimes we even play them at gigs.
Bravo: And in the end tell us what’s with your new album?
Lauri: In winter we have recorded 30 demo-songs and we chose the best ones which will be in the album.
Bravo: It is said that you will record your album at the same American studio where HIM have been recording?
Lauri: Yes, most likely it will be so. The Rasmus have strong Finnish sound on records and we would like to add some American smack a little.
