The Rasmus – Best Band In Finland
The fortune is smiling again to the Spunk! readers, because the singer of The Rasmus, which is the best band in Finland as most people think, Lauri Ylönen agreed to give us exclusive interview.

Why does this band have such name?
Originally it comes from the english words “trash” (in estonian peksma) and “mosh” (in estonian – hullunult vehkima – pöialliisi)

What was the guys like at school? Do you have any musical education?
At school we were all weirdos – we had always different hairstyle and other stuff. The other students loved us or hated us. I might say we were not good students.

Do you want to remember the year 1996? Did the four guys knew then, where they were aheading and was the start difficult?
We all wanted to play in the stadium, which downstairs we had our practice rooms. We had to wait until the year 1998, when our dream came truth. The start was simple, beacuse all the things which happened, were really cool.

Since the beginning of 90′s, why is so much good music coming from Finland?
Finland has just waited for the right time. Actually there was much good music in finland for decades.

The first album “Peep”, was the success of that album very suprising?
Yes!! We went so crazy, because there were coming very much offers to the concerts. We got lots of fans and girls ofcource. But we were only 16 – 17 at that time.

The second album “Playboys” brought you the most important music award in finland – Emma. Is this the one and the most important award?
All the awards are very important to us. Ofcource this was the first and this time the most important award to us. The most important album for us is the first album, which brought us success..

Since then The Rasmus were on stage with many legendary bands, like Rancid, Red Hot Chilli Peppers and Garbage. What are the memories from this time? Which were the bands you looked up to? Who is your favourite artists now?
Since these times we have lots of good memories. We looked up to them at that time and we are doing it now too. Nowadays, we like also Radiohead, Muse, Leonard Cohen, Depeche mode, and many others.

In 1999, the most successful song in finland were “Liquid”. Could you say something about that song?
We have taken this song back to our concertprograms, and we are doing the acoustic version of that song. This is one of my favourite songs since then.

In 2001 the whole europe talked about your song “F-F-F-Falling”, so talks estonia too. How does this kind of hit take birth? Is it hard?
The most successful singels come by mistake. The more irritating and annoying the idea is, the bigger hit it is.

Album “Dead Letters” was so powerful! What do you think?
With this album we were giving concerts almost three years! This is very good and difficult album.

So far the latest album is “Hide From The Sun”. Which is the biggest difference between the first and the latest album?
We are going to record next album in spring 2007. But already we have several good songs made. The first album we had was kind of a arrogant and vain. I beleive, that in the future we are moving back that kind of a music, like we had in first album.

The Rasmus has had concerts in Estonia too. Which are the memories?
The memories are good. Here was very, very much beautiful girls.
