The Rasmus went to the Canary Islands to shoot their new musicvideo. Read extracts from their private journal, only in OKEJ.
February 6th:
Today we landed on windy Fuerteventura. Everybody in the band was really tired after the tour with HIM in Russia (the Russians were really nice and showed us the best of St. Petersburg and Moscow).
When we arrived at the hotel we had a meeting with the video crew and the make-up girl decided to cut Eero’s hair. When he was done, we ate an early dinner and went to bed.
February 7th:
We were woken up really early. Got our make-up done at six in the morning! It was both dark and cold when we went out to the set in our van.
Once we got there we could only wait for the weather to get better. Then it started to rain. So we sat and chilled and drank tea and coffee and just waited and waited. Quite honestly we were starting to get grumpy because of the whole situation.
Once it stopped raining on the other hand things went by really fast, we had lost a lot of time. But everyone felt a bit worried. It was still fairly dark, heavy clouds covered the mountaintops and it was far away from the gazing sun that we had expected.
And of course, just as we had started shooting a huge yellow cloud shows up in the desert. The next second we are buried in a sandstorm! The tents flew away. We didn’t see anything. The huge camera crane was swinging violently in the rough wind (1) there’s a picture of the crane, two people from the crew and Lauri and Pauli and like half of Aki.
It was impossible to work and the entire gang went back to the hotel again. Bummer!
It ended with us having to leave the island and come back two weeks later. Doing a musicvideo isn’t free. And it was definitely Eero’s most expensive haircut – ever!
February 8th:
We are going to do more gigs with HIM and today we landed in Germany
February 9th-19th:
We have done ten gigs with HIM and Negative. Amazing! We have had an amazing audience all the time, probably between 4000 and 9000 on each gig. Completely sold out! We kicked some serious ass (2) picture of Lauri singing and it’s sooo much fun to hang out with HIM. Their fans liked our show as well, which made it all even better!
February 20th:
Had our last gig in Zürich before we flew back to Fuerteventura. The trip went well, except for the fact that Pauli’s guitar was missing when we arrived. We can just hope that it will turn up before the shoot. We are really, really tired, again. Luckily we have time to relax a bit before everything gets started.
February 21st:
Free time! Slept long and took a walk along the shore in the village Corralejo (3) picture of the guys walking, where we live. The weather is much better now, but we are still waiting for Pauli’s guitar.
Tomorrow we will shoot in the desert, near the mountain Tindaya. So today we went there, together with the director Sandra, to climb the mountain (4) picture of Lauri and Aki on the mountain. It’s a holy place and there are all these stories about the spirits that are there. To be on the safe side we performed some sacrifice rituals on top of the mountain and prayed to the weather gods for sun. It felt like a good idea considering our first trip here.
February 22nd:
Got woken up really, really early again! We were in a good mood when we were driven down to the set. As soon as the sun rose over the horizon, we started working. Filmed constantly, all day, with different camera lenses, camera positions, speeds and whatever it was. We even shot a few scenes backwards, so Lauri had to learn the lyrics backwards (5) picture of a note with strange writings on to get the proper lip synching. It sounded really funny!
We also used the giant crane for some really cool shots. And the shotmaker camera mounted on a car that drove towards us at a high speed (6) picture of Lauri in the desert with a camera and crew in front of him. Lauri also sacrificed himself and finally went along with falling backwards while he was singing (7) picture of Lauri falling onto a matrass everything for the art, or the fans!?
The whole team, 25 people, worked their butts off all day and as soon as we weren’t filming there were interviews and photoshoots for different magasines. We were outside all day in gazing sun (better than rain) and we all got a cool sunburn, despite suncream.
In the middle of everything a little wild goat(!) suddenly started to run around on the set (8) picture of the goat. Pauli tried to catch it, without success. We even found bones from dead goats in the desert… (9) picture of Lauri with bones from a goat
The day was finished by us playing against a bluescreen (a big huge blue screen that makes it easier to put whatever images you want in the background) and big mirrors. It will get really exciting to see which shots will make it into the final video.
Finally done! So we went to a local restaurant and ate papas arrugadas (wrinkly, really yummy potatoes) with mojo (tomatosauce) and celebrated the fact that we, hopefully, had made a cool video!
Now with hindsight we agree that it was a really funny shoot, but next time we would rather shoot in a studio. Far away from rain, sun, sandstorms and wild goats…
See you later!
