THE RASMUS in Rock it!? What the…? This question will not only be posed by our G7, but also by some of our readers.
But stay calm, I will give you the answer of course, and the four Finns will tell you the rest themselves in the following interview. For the success and the purse the song “In The Shadows” was an absolute breakthrough. But for a serious career as rock band it’s rather hindering to have to share the group with the own children, and that just because Lauri is soooo sweet. I see that a bit different though, for one I have the deciding advantage of not having children, and next I don’t reduce a band on the amount of Top of the pops appearances. All in all for me then a band that just writes really great songs and also knows to present them accordingly. And the four haven’t just prooved that on their last album “Hide From The Sun”, but also on the past tour with HIM and NEGATIVE. And exactly there I caught the whole band for the following interview.
Do you still have fun touring or are you getting tired of it?
No, not at all! We still have as much fun as in the beginning to be on stage every night. We’re musicians from top to bottom, and as a musician it’s a dream to be able to go on stage as often as possible. We were at home for five weeks just now after coming home from Russia, and now it’s going on in Europe. As long as it’s like this, that we can go home every now and again and get a rest, it’s really perfect. We had the best shows in Russia that we’ve played for the new album until now and were completely overwhelmed by the reaction there. It’s quite good then to be able to let the whole thing settle and restart again afterwards. That way it’s much better to suck in everything that happesn around you and it’s not just like one big film running away. It’s always nice to leave the bus again after a two months long tour, but on the other hand we’re always happy again then it starts all over again!
You get quite a good reception with the Russian audience, we heard?!
Yes, somehow we do. At least concerning concerts there I can only answer with a big yes. But I can’t tell you how the album is going there. It’s no different for us than for all the other artist. Due to the fact that they sell very many cheap bootlegs of all bands it’s hard to say how popular one is there really. But we have made the experience, that people are really glad if you go on tour there because it’s by no means a matter of course. Nobody knows exact sales numbers from Russia, so only few bands go on tour there. The fans in Russia are missing that, of course. And therefore they are really even more glad when we come to their country and play concerts for them.
There are rumours that there will be a THE RASMUS DVD in the near future – is there any truth in that!
No, not at all! In the near past we were asked about that a lot by many people, but we really don’t know anything about it. Our further plans look very different. We will probably release the one or the other single from this album and be on stage a lot still. A tour in South America and Japan is already planned, and in the summer we will play some festivals, hopefully also some here in Germany. After that we’ll go back into the studio to record the successor to “Hide From The Sun”.
Wasn’t it tremendously hard to go to work on the new album after the succes of “Dead Letters”, knowing that you should turn up with another bombastic song like “In The Shadows”?
Of course the pressure was great, but I think we’re so tight as a band that such things don’t affect us. You know, you can’t plan a hit anyway, that’s never worked out and for that reason we never spent a thought on it. We had many many songs already that we’d written beforehand, and we worked on those then. It wasn’t just this one song, we were hyped as a band also quite a lot. One should never forget, though, that we’ve been around as a band for half our lives, and we already had four albums released before “Dead Letters”, they were very successful in Finland. So the situation wasn’t quite as extreme for us as one could assume. It didn’t go from zero to hundred, but step by step. We released five singles from “Dead Letters” and we already have three on the record for the new album. I do think we’ve done it right and didn’t have to have a second “In The Shadows” on the CD. But what we really had to get used to was the fact that a part of our audience that mustn’t be underestimated reduced us to one or two sonds. We felt that at our own shows even more than if we were guests on another tour. That was to loud and too long for some. They wanted to hear their two sonds and could have gone home again after that. But that’s all come back to order again now.
Then one should think that the tour now with HIM and NEGATIVE is really perfect for you and also for the fans.
It really is fantastic. We discussed that already longer time ago, when Ville and I recorded the song “Bittersweet” with APOCALYPTICA. All bands get along with each other well and for the fans it’s a full serve, of course. I think it’s become a good thing for everybody involved and we’re really happy to be on it. Now, everybody who can get away from the thought that THE RASMUS were a teenie band only will be presented with a really good rock album with “Hide From The Sun”. All the other simply haven’t deserved it. This CD can’t be deleted from my collection ever and has developed into a everlasting inhabitant of my CD player.
