Rasmus’ odyssey to India begins Dec 2 [India]

They started playing in 1994. Eleven years down the line, The Rasmus boasts of being one of Europe’s top bands. The four-member Finland-based band will be in Mumbai on December 2 and in Bangalore two days later. HT City spoke to vocalist Lauri Ylonen.

You started when you were only 16 years old and in high school. How was the journey?
We were very young but confident. We did not know that our first album would be a hit. This helped us get a number of concerts in Finland and other parts of Europe. Our focus is lyrics. We have always concentrated on our lyrics and then tried to spread the message through our music. With every passing day we are becoming more confident.

Do the lyrics reflect personal experiences?
All the songs are very personal. We observe everything that is happening around us during our tours. As we are travellers, the influence of nature is there in a lot of our songs. We do not do anything extraordinary to bring out good lyrics. It all comes on its own.

Hide From The Sun has won you the MTV Award for best band this year. How is it different form your earlier albums?
This is our seventh album. Dead letters, the title track of the sixth album, speaks of a letter that was never delivered and the lyrics are very strong. This time the music, too, is catchy. We are very happy with the arrangements of the album Hide From… as the tunes are very melodic with intensive use of guitars.

You have won several awards for this album, including Finland’s Grammy. How do you rate the album?
Certainly, this is the best album from our kitty. We did not plan anything while writing the lyrics. It was very easy for us as we are together for 11 years and know each other very well. The song No Fear is an example. We have been touring the world a lot now and that has made us more mature.

What are your plans for India?
It will be a great experience. The songs will be collective decision, but the audience always matters a lot and we will cater to their demands.
