Interview with Aki and Lauri [Sweden]

The guys in The Rasmus are very soft and relaxed, almost a bit boring actually. Lauri is the one who’s talking except when we talk about all the fans standing outside the hotels where Aki butts in.
“Yes we want more.”

So it feels like that?
“We love it,” Aki says. “Well if you get to the airport early in the morning and there is a lot of people there with cameras and stuff it can get annoying.”
Lauri: Of course it’s flattering. That was why we wanted to become famous in the first place. To be recognized and being able to be proud over something.

Could you ever date a fan?
It depends on the fan. I mean my parents are my fan so it depends how the person is. I like to meet persons that are more laidback and that you actually can talk to them and she is not screaming as soon as she sees me or when she hears my name. That’s not a good way to start a conversation.

So what should a girl do to impress you?
To get me in bed you mean? Be honest with the answers, well she have to be self confident. That is good. Be in balance with herself.

How do you see if she is that?
The way she is.

When we talk about fans Lauri talks very much, but when I ask about possible girlfriends they all are very closed and don’t wanna tell. Neither of them wanna tell if they have girlfriends.

But if you wanted to charm a girl what would you do?
We are pretty emotional in our music so maybe that’s why we are not so open about emotions in other cases. We rather get our emotions out in the music.

So are you romantic with flowers and candles then?
Yeah I guess I am.

The guys are relaxed, both in their apperance and the look. Lauri wears a hat and I thought it was because he didn’t found any time but it shows wrong. He never really fix the hair.

So why did you get dreads?
I just saw it and liked it.

Could you remove them?
No.

How much do you care about your looks?
It’s important in one way the way you dress or have the hair and with the look you also link people. I mean you see punkrockers looks like that and they can even recognize another punk rocker.

While we are talking the guys are painting their own self portraits and they are actually very good at it and Lauri paint himself in a bottle.

Do you feel like you are in a bottle?
Sometimes. It’s like my personality.

So you wish to never be recognized?
Both yeah and no. It’s fun to be recognized and to hear positive things about the music you do, but if I wanna run away I’ve got my ways.

Do you miss the dear ones when you are out touring?
Of course its hard but it’s also good and it gives me insperation to new songs and just knowing they are there and we can travel back home helps and when it gets too hard we still have each other and since we really have known eachother so long so we know when we want to be alone or when we need company. We don’t need so many words we know and that is good.

It’s already 11 years since they begun and all the guys except Aki went in same school and started playing together.
“Me and Eero begun playing some covers on Status Quo when we were just 10.” Lauri says.

So what will you do about 10 years?
It’s hard to say its such a long time ago, but right now it feels like we still will be playing. You’ve to trust your feelings and go with the flow. We wanna do more albums and we already have some new ideas for the next album.

Is it important to make your own music?
Yeah we could never do some music another person had written. It’s important for us to be in touch with what we sing about. I’ve really some bad problems with young teen agestars singing way too sexy stuff for their age. It’s hidden porn.

What about these programs like Idol?
Well it’s not that serious and it’s good for people who wants their 15 minute in fame, but since it’s not that serious it’s really no problem for us so called real bands.

What makes you so special?
I think when we are on stage we can give the fans a smile on their face and they always leave with a smile on the face and our goal is to make people happy.

What’s No fear about?
Moving forward. To leave all the shit behind you and start over again. I am there myself where I don’t know where I am going. Well I know what happens tomorrow, but not really more and that is a good feeling even though some people can’t stand to live like that. Maybe they have pressuare from the family or something , but I think you should do your own decisions.

Which is your favourite on the new album?
Sail away. It’s so defferent from our actual style, but it’s so beautiful and still a bit sad.

And last do you like Sweden?
Yeah why not?
