“Dead Letters” showed that The Rasmus were particularly fond of black clothes and crows…With their new album “Hide From The Sun” the Finns go again a bit very far in the dark side of the hard rock force. Does The Rasmus is the gothic band popular at the moment? We asked the question to the singer Lauri.
After the last album, you went on tour for 2 years. Did you have the time to have a rest before the new album?
“No. We started to write the lyrics on tour. There’s always lots of time between the soundcheck, the concert, the journey…We play guitar, we jam, the ideas come. We put everything aside for the album. The tour has been so long that, after I cracked up. When you work very hard and after you don’t have anything to do anymore you become ill. It’s what happened to me. I was exhausted, and everything left like the following day of party. When everything returned in the order, we meet again to set up the main lines of the new album, and we started the recording. My big worry was that we didn’t find the inspiration to write songs as strong as the last album but we had lots of ideas.”
The fans who liked “Dead Letters” are likely to be surprised by “Hide From The Sun”?
“Not really. The greatest compliment the greatest compliment that one gave us, it was to say to us that from the first seconds we know that it is Rasmus. To have a sound which is proper, it’s the most important for the band.”
The lyrics you write are very dark. And it’s marked even more than before. From which this fascination for the dark side comes from?
“Yes, that’s true : when I sing “No fear, destination darkness”, I can’t be more forthcoming ! To me, write all these stuff, it’s a way to evacuate it from my system, it’s like a psychoanalysis. It can be negative when you hear that first, but if you pay attention, the deep sense of my lyrics is positive. It’s often a metaphor, which tackle the topic of the initiation rite. If someone dies it’s to live again in a better life.”
What the single “No Fear” talks about?
“I have been inspired from the last album’s video “Funeral Song”. In the video, our best one I think so, a girl is hurt in a car accident. At the end, she’s dying. I’m the angel of the Death who comes to take her. In “No fear”, I tell her to don’t be afraid and come with me. Like I said it’s the idea of passage to a better life.”
The video has been released by Jörn Heitmann who did the three last videos of Rammstein…
“I like very much his work for Rammstein, but also for other German bands like Guano Apes. How to say? He knows how to use colors and let show everything very dark. When we called him, he agreed immediately. We sent him the song the following day, he held the idea of the scenario ! We have been impressed. His scenario sticks with the lyrics, it’s not always the case. Often, bands do videos which don’t have any sense with the lyrics. There it’s based on the fantastic Italian film by Dario Argento “Phenomena” (1985), where the main character is a girl sleepwalks who goes to dangerous situations. It’s very beautiful but it makes very fear. I like this contrast.”
How have you accepted the success of “Dead Letters”?
“To me, it changed lots of things. It made me very fragile. One day the medias acclaim me, and the following day, only a word can destroy me. Because of this permanent situation, I’m alive. But it’s also very gruelling. It makes me change the look on the things and I became aware the way how this world works. Everything is far to be pink. I became more serious and I don’t like it.”
You became superstars. How did you spend the money that you got?
“A part of our money went to the construction of our studio, Dynasty Recordings, for every band who is in Dynasty. But, personally, I spend lots of money in bars. I don’t know if I’m allowed to say, but I can spend 10.000€ in a stipetease club in one night. It makes the hangover even more cruel when the following day I see the bill! I bought also an house and I’ll get soon a boat. The other members of the bands are more serious than me. We can say they’re a bit stingy. They aren’t the ones who pay the drink of everybody but they are rather the ones who make you pay yours. Not very Rock’n'roll”

Behind their dark clothes and their corpse powdered expression, The Rasmus are properly guys, they love their parents, who support them since the beginning and have hobbies really respectable. Lauri’s hobby is to cook, Eero likes meditation, as for Aki, he likes swimming and…cabinetmaking.
