Update on the band from Lauri [Israel]

It is time to get out of the shadows and stop hidding from the sun, because The Rasmus are back with their 6th and powerfull album, “Hide From The Sun”. What did Lauri learn in Mexico, how was Sweden, and what is it with the butterflies? All the answers are here.
Have you missed The Rasmus? So did we. So what shall we do, keep sitting around and miss Lauri and his Finnish friends? Of course not. The guys (Lauri – Vocals, Pauli – Guitar, Eero – Bass, and Aki – Drums) have a new album out, Hide From The Sun.
When the grey rain clouds are here again, everyone is invited to come back to the shadows due to the Finnish rock music attack that coming toward us this winter. Soon we will discuss HIM’s and Nightwish’s new albums, but first thing is first, The Rasmus.
Hard to believe, but Hide From The Sun is the band’s 6th album, when the members’ age is only 26! More hard to beileve is that the guys play together for 11 years, however their international breakthrough happened two years ago with their 5th album Dead Letters, that includes the mega-hit In The Shadows. We can say surely that the hard work had paid off. This time, the logo of the big record company Universal is printed proudly on thier new album, and we can only say the band have upgraded her level between the rock bands of our days.

Into The Shadows
“Hide From The Sun” has 11 songs, and includes the first and succesful single “No Fear”, the great ballad “Don’t Let Go”, the potentional poppish hit “Sail Away” and the so called continuation for “In The Shadows” – “Night After Night (Out Of The Shadows)”.
The general style of the album has the familiar formula of The Rasmus, however you can feel the addition of string instruments and piano in several songs. “I think our new album is filled with contrastions” Lauri explains. “We’ve combined great melodies with serious lyrics in one hand, and loud guitar riffs and sweet words on the other. I’m really pleased with the result of it”
Truth is, we have no idea which “sweet words” Lauri means exactly, as most of the songs in the album are related to subjects (in one way or another) such as death and sadness. “Shot”, “Lucifer’s Angel”, “Dead Promises” and “Heart Of Misery” are good examples to song titles which doesn’t really make you feel optimistic. You see Lauri, we aren’t on the dark side queit yet, but on the other hand, if we want optimistic music we would call Hillary Duff.
Usually after a band releases an album who is commurcialy successful (See “Dead Letters”) it is hard for them to reach the same level of success. Furthermore, the band members are getting into deep pressure and sometimes lose their confidence, because of the fear of not filling the expectations that are made for them and to dissapoint the fans with the new album. Luckily, it isn’t the case with Hide From The Sun, that his recordings were easily going in the band.
“We were much more sure of what we wanted to do in this album.” Says Pauli “While we sat down to write the lyrics it was very easy for us, everything created almost by itself. We’ve been a band for 11 years now, and know eachother so well that we don’t need to ask one another “what do you think”. If someone has a musical idea he will know how the others will respone to it even before he consultes with them. The chemistry between us and the producers (Martin Hansn and Michael Nord) have reached new levels and all the process is much easier”.

Swedish Dream
Both “Dead Letters” and “Hide From The Sun” were recorded on Stockholm, Sweden. “We had many advantages when we worked in another country” Lauri tells “In Finland, when we were finished everyone has gone to his own house to his private life. This time we all lived in one appartment in Stockholm while recording. We were going out on the nights and we felt much more united and stronger as a band. It gave us many confident and I am sure people can notice that on the album.”
Lauri also wants you to know that the songs in the new album are about running and hidding. “I know it is kinda pasimistic” The singer admits “But I see in escape some sort of help to yourself, in understanding. A man closes himself not to reveal his feelings. The last year was very intensive for us, in most cases in the good way, we traveled the world, and have seen and leanred new things. Personally, I can say that my reflection of life has changed.”
One of the most intersting stories from the past years takes us to far Mexico. Between the gigs in the main cities, The Rasmus were out traveling in ancient Mexico, in which Indians are living long side with other sided of Mexico. As a gesture, the guide in their trip had amnaged to make the guys a citizen of honor in one of the tribes, something that emotioned them.
“The Indians are really down to earth,” Lauri remembers “I was always intersted in nature, but after seeing how the tribe respects the animals and working for their living in the grounds, I’ve stopped and thought about the world that we are living in. No one here in Europe is that connected to the nature, maybe even reality, such as the Indians we’ve met.”
Fortunatly, Lauri awares that there are other things than traveling and making good money while Rock N Rolling. Many famous people lose their minds when the success is finally reached, but it seems like The Rasmus are not the kind who will do that.
“The secret is to be confident in yourself and not being scared to be failled” Lauri explains the rules of the game “We knew we can make it and we felt it coming, eventhough we have much more to learn, ways to go and things to achieve. I think that if our breakthrough would have been made five years ago we were dead. There are so many temptations out there, and if you are not bright and carefull enough something eventually will f**k your mind. Looking back, I realise the best way was to grow and develpoe with the band, and not to win the glory over night. I think our music has special place in the world right now. There is no band who sounds exactly like us, and makes melodies with loud guitar riffs as we do, and that is what we are proud of”.

Butterfly Effect
Before we finish, we leave you with what we call here “The Scandinavian butterfly effect”. Here is the explanation; On the cover of “Hide From The Sun” there is a butterfly drawing, while the first single of HIM is called “Wings Of A Butterfly”. In addition, the fact the Ville Valo and Lauri are good friends, we have a beautiful butterfly-ish connection between the bands. “I’ve talked with Ville on the phone and was surprised to hear that he has gone to the butterfly thingy aswell.” Lauri laughs “I guess we have samiliar way of thinking”.
