It’s autumn and the weather starts to turn cold, and with this scenario, our hearts and souls are happy for having the brand-new songs of The Rasmus…
Happy to be back!
It’s a summer morning, the city enjoys the last sunny days of the summer when the phone rings… In Finland it’s between 5 or 6 in the afternoon, here it’s 11 a.m.; Pauli, the guitarist, who has stolen our hearts since the beginning (if you remember, we had the chance to talk with Lauri, in person!) “Hello, where are you from?”, he asks. After answering from Mexico City, he says happily “¡Hola!, ¿Cómo estás?” [Hello! How are you?], in a pretty good Spanish.
How do you feel of being back in stage?
“We’re happy, it’s really cool”, he assures in perfect English. “It’s our sixth album, we’ve been together for 11 years and our career has been fantastic. We started when we were 15/16 years old and all has gotten better; more than partners, we’re like brothers or a marriage. We’ve done a good album and songs you’re going to love.”
Before the return…
Tell us how your days have been from the last concert ’til now…
“First, we took our normal lives up again. We were able to see our families and friends after a while traveling; it was nice to be back home again. But, actually, we return almost immediately to work in this album, we already have songs that were written during the tour, so we had some work done.”
I heard you move to an apartment in Stockholm, Sweden while you were recording. How was to live together?
“It was very nice, we could be totally concentrated in the music, there was no one nor nothing to distract us, just us; of course we went out to have dinner sometimes but only us. I, for example, spent a lot of time with Lauri, singing and watching him write and that was cool.”
Do you feel any kind of pressure after Dead Letters’ success?
“We have thought about it, but the music is the most important thing. It would be helpless if we begin to worry about it. We had a very successful album in our country, other three good ones and the fourth that gave us international success, and we’re glad it occurred that way ’cause, before, we might have acted like stupid guys, but now we know how appreciate it more. ”
The new album
What’s the “mood” of this album?
“Hide From The Sun it’s a happier album, it has happiness, although it sounds darker due to the musical arrangements.”
What about your songs, what are you singing about?
“It’s more about emotional stuff. In Dead Letters, the songs were very personal, things about our lives, now they’re about what we have within, feelings and emotions we have experimented during the last two years of touring over 29 countries. Days full of happiness and excitement for being in different places but at the same time we felt sadness for not being with our friends and families. We lived an interesting mixture of sadness-happiness.”
What can you tell me about “Night After Night (Out of the shadows)”?
“Lauri writes the songs but I can tell you that this is like a sequel to In The Shadows. I’m not quite sure but in ITS he talks about darkness and shadows, it’s a sad song; in this new song he says he feels so good and, in a way, he goes out of the shadows every night.”
Do you have expectations, what kind of reactions do you expect?
“Honestly, I ain’t expecting something. We have played the album to some friends and they liked it, and our friends don’t lie. We are happy and pleased with it. If people don’t like it, that would be something extra, if not, we don’t worry about it.”
This album is released in a moment when you’re completely known world wide. Have you already got used to it?
“Yes, in a way. We started in our country, but now it’s something common, although Finnish people are shy. The most known is Lauri, everybody recognize him in Finland and no one know me; in México and other countries it’s the same, but that’s fine with me.”
You have accomplished many of your dreams, do you have new ones?
“Lauri and me have opened a studio and a record label in Finland, it’s called Dynasty Recordings, we’re going to promote new bands. That’s our new dream.”
Memories of Mexico…
What do you remember of Mexico?
“Everything! I spent a good time in there and I still have friends I chat with on the MSN or by e-mail; it was so nice in a emotional and musical level. Although I visited the pyramids (Teotihuácan), people were the best; they’re so nice, like Finnish people. We’ve been thinking a lot about México and, curiously, we’ve been talking of that visit in every single interview in Finland. Today, in the studio, we were seeing what we did there, and it was great to hear people shouting.”
When are you coming back?
“I have no idea, but I would love to come back. I want to say this in Spanish, but you translate, just don’t tell them I said things like ‘mamacitas’ y ‘papacitos’, ok?:
Les mando saludos a los chicos que gustan del rock, y a las chicas guapas de allá, nos veremos pronto (Greetings to all the guys who like rock and to the beautiful girls there. See you soon).”
