Lauri and Aki about “Hide From The Sun” [Sweden]

The last album Dead letters sold 1,5 million copies, but how can you ever do that again? On the new album Hide from the sun the finnish band The rasmus tries to please all the fans with a mixture of something hard and softer stuff.
After 9 years struggeling of the finnish clubs The rasmus got a big break through 2003 with Dead letters and the album sold a lot and they also became the best nordic sellers and the hopes for the new album is therfor very high, but the critics have also become worse. In Sweden they say The rasmus is the worst band in the world and that they are super jerks. Still the guys seems kinda laid back of the bad wiew of the band. “We need to have a kick in the ass so we can proove for everyone that we kick ass;”.
But how does it feels to always get bad rewiews then?
“I try not to think about it. I am normally a thinker and can get sad very easily, but I don’t want it to be like that. We try to ignore that kind of things and after all it’s just one person and we have fans that loves us,” the singer says. Lauri is the center of the attention. The soft smile and the crazy hair and the pulled down beanie tells us about a sensitive. He is also the one who write the texts and he also takes care of the most of the interwiews.
“We have pretty good self confidence and even too much sometimes and we still feels like this is just the beginning. For us every album is a new start. “Lauri says. Hide from the sun has some differences than Dead letters even though they still keep the same producers in the swedish guys Micke Nord Andersson and Martin Hanssen. It’s rockier and harder than Dead letters and they do know about it even though Ylönen thinks it also has another side.
“We wanted to find a mixture between the beautyness and the hardness. Some of the sounds are harder, but we still have for example Sail away that is kinda soft so I think it’s a nice mixture. Its bending the limits by being both harder and softer.”
The lyrics are often about leaving someone you love or dying and Lauri says its what they’ve felt as a band these hectic years.
“I mean we are out touring a lot. Last year we were away from Finland 250 days and there are the people we still love the most so it feels like we drift away from that safe wprld. When I sing about the death it’s not the real death I sing about, but some new beginnings so it defianly has some positives vibes even if it’s dark,” he says.
They were 16 when they begun and you maybe think the hectic life of touring would make them arguing a lot, but they claim that they more likely has grown even tighter and the chemistry between them still is very good, both Aki and Lauri means.
“We are going to a lot of new places. Soon we’ll go to India for example and we meet new cultures almost everyday. This has made us appreciate Finland more and people are so honest and nice back home. Maybe more shy and reserved, but once you’ve broke the shield you’ll have a friend for life. That is what we are too. We have days when we don’t wanna talk at all too. Then they believe we are arrogant bastards, but we actually prefer 2 be quiet sometimes.

The Rasmus about their own favourite bands
Muse, Red Hot Chili Peppers, System Of A Dowm and Guns And Roses (Aki) Weezer and Mew are amazing too and I actually bought 11 cds with Iron maided. I didn’t have one cd of them before (Lauri).

The finnish music scene growing bigger
Right now it feels like the rest of the world looks after new Finnish bands coming out. A couple of years ago Sweden was the most important music country, but this time it feels like Finland has more (Aki).

About the other big finnish band HIM
We release our album pretty much in the same time and we all come from Finland and I’ve done a duet with Ville. Then there is also the symbol of the butterfly we both use. Him’s new single is called “Wings Of A Butterfly”.
