“Hide From The Sun” review [UK]

After The Rasmus released Dead Letters last year many of us (including this writer) dismissed them as a flash in the pan pop act on the wrong side of the musical tracks. Having amassed a huge following regardless, the question now isn’t whether we should embrace The Rasmus but whether they’ve got anything more to offer. Opening track Shot shows they’ve done little to stray from their trademark infectious pop sound, but there’s an added edge that places the Finns at the more dynamic end of the commercial scale. At times, they even boast an electrifying heaviness more commonly associated with Muse (Lucifer’s Angel, Immortal). So yes, the band who were so conscious of the need to assert their rock credential this time have achieved their goal. But when these songs lodge themselves in your head, as they inevitably will, it’ll still be the pop that gets you.
