The Rasmus see the light again! [Netherlands]

After their big hit two years ago, The Rasmus were “In The Shadows” themselves. But the light is on and that’s why fancy is making a light on the singer Lauri himself. And that’s what this darkminded man can use!

Hey Lauri, all alone in Netherlands? Where is the rest of The Rasmus?
The rest is in Finland, doing the last stuff for the new album “Hide From The Sun”, which is going to release at September 12th. I have all day long already a hotline with them to hear the last stuff and say that’s good.

Two years ago was your first single In The Shadows a big hit. What is your best memory of that time?
Everything that you see and do for the first time is great, that was also about our succes, it was great. We were at festivals in whole Europe where everyone were singing our songs. That is magic, but it all went too fast. There happened too much in a short time, so we couldn’t really enjoy it. We had to bring ourself back on the earth again to realise what was happening and that we weren’t there yet. There had to come another album to surpass our first succes. So there was work to do.

So you dove right into the studio?
We first did a tour through Asia. During that tour we already wrote songs, so the ideas were there. We had rehearsels for only one months and after that we dive indeed in the studio. The album is almost done, we are now busy with ideas for videos.

Your lyrics are kinda heavy. How is that with the Hide From The Sun album?
It looks like a lot of songs are negative, the lyrics are kinda depressive. But the meaning behind it it positive, because of a sort of hidden message. Writing songs is for me almost a therapy to get feelings our of my system. I can get thoughts and ideas out of my head because I write them down. A lot of lyrics are very open for the listeners. You have to use your fantasy to fill them in or to translate them to yourself.

What is typical finnish of your music?
We use a lot of images from the nature. I have a summerhouse in Finland, near a little lake. It is there very quite, there are no neighbours and I have a little boat. Complete different than this world. In the music I try to seek such peacefull images and let them come back. Because of that there is a lot of contrast in one song. Than is for example the lyric very beautiful, but the sound very dark and moody. Or the other way. That little twist I like to add, because I am that way myself too. I am somebody with two sides, I like to play with emotions. The one day I am very elated and the other day very down. That gives me the feeling that I am really alive, that there is something happening. Music is a piece of tools to keep these feelings under control. Where you listen too, is making you how you feel.

What makes you happy?
Lately I was walking through Amsterdam. I enjoyed the surroundings and to see al those happy people. That’s what makes me really happy. Sometimes I take too much time alone and because of that I forget that outside of that there’s a whole world too. And if I see that again, I think: I have to go more outside!
