If you didn’t hear at least once “In The Shadows” last year, it’s that you don’t live in France! Far from lose them in the considerations which don’t take place to be, The Rasmus opens with “Hide From The Sun”, the sixth chapter of a career which starts just now.
When a group as meets a world success fulgurating as that of The Rasmus there are one year and half, you can see it moving differently. Some do not have enough retreat to be able to realize inherent changes, others live it with unconcern. And then, there is the case of The Rasmus and his Lauri singer. This one, certainly too sensitive, is affected at the point where each one of his words resounds painfully. Despite of the repercussions of success, Lauri remained the same one as when we had met it just a year ago. i’ts with the benevolence that we know it to him and calms which characterizes him, that he delivers to us without any reserve his fears, his joys, its reflections too.
Welcome in his world, the one of half-lights where there’s still the reflections of winter freezing scintillate.
Before and after
For the French public which discovered The Rasmus with “In The Shadows”, there is well the before and the after “Dead Letters”, the album which exploded the group with the face of the world.
“Much things changed for us. Maybe that it will be easier to say what in a few years. But I think that the things became in a way or another a little more fragile, more emotional. Because it’s so hard, there are so much things which will have occurred in a little time that it’s difficult to don’t lose the foot. In just three years, we had all that we wanted “, Lauri admits, before beginning again: “After our last concert, when we finally made a break, I tried to take two weeks to rest me but all the troubles returned to me. It was obviously still too early for my entourage. I had to protect me. But today, I don’t feel any pressure to continue. Fortunately that we had composed all the songs during the last tour. We played all the time in backstage or in the bus. Blow, the stopped concerts, we had already twenty compositions”.
After their concert in Japan the group almost directly returned in studio. Lauri details : “I had much inspiration thanks the road, all was very spontaneous and we didn’t need to be too much pushed to arrive with new songs. It’s although, for us, the things occurred, naturally and simply.
The excitation of the new songs
We don’t change a team which win. It’s under the levers of Northern Mikael Andersson and Martin Hansen, in a studio in the north of Stockholm, that The Rasmus concretized two years of compositions. An obliged passage that Lauri hardly seems appreciated. “I really don’t like to be in studio. It’s always very stressing because time slips by and you know that you must stop at 5 o’clock (pm). The studio isn’t inevitably a very creative place. The good ideas come once that you are outside, the evening when you return at home or that you have fun in party”, explains the singer who doesn’t manage to sleep at night, too excited with the idea to present his new songs at the guys of the group. It make me sick of their reaction especially when I estimate that the title is really good; I apprehend their feelings. Lauri acknowledges that he doesn’t felt pressure at the time of the writing of the songs since his group was on the road, the imminent exit of the album does not seem to reassure it. At present, I feel a pressure but it arrived at the very last moment when all was finished. When I listened to the mix, I’m say to myself: “Shit, it’s all that I can do. I can’t do better than that!”.
Soon this album will be out and everyone will be able to judge it. Inevitably, they will compare it with the precedent one, like: “They couldn’t remake a song as “In The Shadows” but they tried to do it with this one”. I already read chronicles like that, that can be completely wounding.”
Ideas more heavy
When we had seen The Rasmus at the time of their passage to the Elysée-Montmartre, Lauri had entrusted to us that the album was going to be different from the precedent one, that the group would take a turning more heavy, more directed towards the guitars. The compositions being finished, the singer reconsiders his declarations: “When we composed the first song of this album, “Immortal”, we had all of the ideas and she was more heavy with many riffs. It’s a perfect song for the concerts. But some come “Sail Away” are more for the campfires! For other titles like “Don’t Let Go”, it’s still very different. It’s slow but not like a ballad. With final, you have part of the album which is heavy and the other one much quieter “.
A monster and butterflies
Although “Dead Letters” was written during one enough dark time for his singer and that on the contrary that of “Hide From The Sun” was more serene, the album seems to reveal the tops as much that bottoms. “I think that I was rather positive but there was days when I smelled myself very well and others very badly. I had this notepad on which I always write some lines or many poems; in fact, all that come in my mind. If you read my private diary, you understand from what my inspiration comes. I have very much noted for these three last years, reveals Lauri; Well before composing the new songs, the group wanted to try to create images. I want to have a song and riffs which sound as if there were butterflies which fly around, a monster which is able to catch them and to eat them. It can appear stupid but it doesn’t matter. When you make noise with your guitar, the riff can make you think a monster. We composed a few songs with this point of view there and it was superb”, notes Lauri. He continues: “This album is very theatrical. Particularly with the words which function permanently by oppositions, and with much of contrasts. For example, the line of song that I find is very pretty and, at the same time, the words go in the opposition like poisoning the melody. Or, you have a pretty melody topic and you hear very aggressive riffs which accompany it “.
His own imaginary
As for the texts, this time, they are not based as much on the reality of Rasmus. The preceding album, the topic was more like “I miss you, you are mine”. This time, it’s more open in the way where I let the people who listen their own imaginary. I think it’s good like that, each one must to do his own opinion. One of my favourite groups is called Kent sings in Swedish. I adore listen to them because I don’t understand what he can sing but that enables me to wake up my spirit. Hidden messages of the sun whose fans will be made a pleasure to seize. Still is it that with “Hide From The Sun”, The Rasmus proves that “Dead Letters” wasn’t an accident.
NEW SONGS!
We asked Lauri to comment some pieces of his new titles.
“Immortal”
This song is maybe a little more complicated than usually, because there are many things inside. It’s enough different from the others and it’s one of my favourite. It’s enough melodic with many riffs of guitar. It speaks about the future, of the end of the world in a metaphorical way. Something of evil will arrive to us. Then, we must flee before disappear.
“Lucifer’s Angel”
I read some books which speak about the things which arrived four hundred years ago on these people who tried to help the others, who wanted to change the world. Everyone said that these people were wizards, that they were sent by Satan. It shoud to be well people. They were good and curious and they were killed, burnt, I think that the same thing arrives today in the world as soon as somebody arrives with a new vision, new idea, people are frightened and push back these characters. I just found a connection between today and our past.
“Night After Night (Out Of The Shadows)”
It’s a little like a second part of “In The Shadows” but, musically, it’s a different topic. In the first part, I was a little desperate, I put questions about the life and I waited help and the answers. I lived things, that allowed me to solve some of my problems. Then I thought that would be cool to arrive with one history and to give one following to this song.
“Dead Promises”
This piece is the one which has the most contrasts, more dramatic too. At the beginning, I arrived with the riffs at the guitar, but when I listened to the sound of Apocalyptica, I immediately say that it would be perfect for this piece. That speaks about our choices of life. When we are on the road, the life is different. Sometimes, you start to sleep whereas the sun starts to lie down. We can’t live all the time with the hidden sun. Reality returns quickly, once the finished concerts. There too, we shouldn’t veil the face.
“Sail Away”
This song it’s imposed of itself. I was scraping my guitar and I said myself “It’s a very good song just as it is”. I played it to the others. We kept her very simple.
“Last Generation”
It’s one of my favourite. Certainly also an excellent song on stage.
“Dancer In The Dark”
I like Björk. I also really liked the history of the film “Dancer In The Dark” because I can find me there. She keeps a secret, she becomes blind and she must hide it. I feel a little the same kind of things. If I had big problems, I wouldn’t come to see you. I would keep them for me and I would try to solve them by myself, even if it’s not always the best solution.
