The Rasmus: no fear to success [Colombia]

How was the musical scene in which The Rasmus formed?
We are from Helsinki, which is the capital of my country. Since it is the most important city, it has one of the most significant music scenes in Finland. By the time we started playing, which was late 90′s, It was possible to see different bands of so many genres, and that was very gratifying because the movement was getting richer. I was on holiday in the city recently and I was able to listen new bands that have such a big potential. I think in the next years Finland will have so many bands going around the world.

And from then until now, how would you define the artistic proposal of the band?
Well, we have been playing together for so long and our music has changed a lot. At the beginning we were really interested in skate, punk and funk. But as years passed, we developed our own style. When it comes to define the kind of music we are doing right now, I guess that what we are most interested in is in making very melodic rock songs , full of drama and melancholy, without leaving behind the strong sound.

You write the lyrics for the band. Do you have any special method to write? How would you describe the style of your lyrics?
I always have a little notebook with me where I write the ideas and feelings that come to my head. Afterwards I use that material and turn it into some sort of poems that later become the lyrics of the band. My lyrics are very intimate and are about the vision I have of the world.

The Rasmus faced success from the very beginning, at least in Helsinki. How is it to deal with fame?
The truth is that you never realize what is going on because is what we have always dreamt of. In our lives so many things have changed. Going to another countries, going on tour and meeting people is stimulating for our inspiration. However sometimes you miss things like family, friends…but in life there is always a price to pay to get to do what you like.

From all the Albums of The Rasmus, Could you choose one as “the one” or the best for you?
It’s very difficult to say it because every record has something special. It is possible that in Dead Letters you find some of the best songs of the band. Our new record has very interesting elements as well. This time we captured different moods and made some very powerful songs while in others we emphasized more in the acoustic sound, so I believe that Hide From The Sun it’s also avery complete material.

You were the opening act for bands like Red Hot Chili Peppers and Garbage in your country. What did you learn from those experiences?
That was at the beginning of the band. Besides of the excitement of being the opening act for such an important bands, (specially Red Hot Chili Peppers, we are big fans) the experience teaches you to deal with very demanding and massive audiences.

Let’s talk about Hide From The Sun, How was the process of recording this album?
It was very fun. The producers were Mikael Nord Anderson and Martin Hansen from Sweden. We got along just fine in every aspect. We worked in a wonderful studio and the process was very quick and the ideas we had for each song were understood perfectly by the producers. The first single we chose to promote the new album is No Fear and its video was shot in Berlin.

You worked with Apocalyptica in their track Bittersweet, included in the last album of the band. Let’s talk about that a little.
We met the members of Apocalyptica like 5 years ago and we became friends. They are some of the best musicians in our country and for us was an honor to play with them, We learnt a lot and drank a little too much beers.

Is the image important to you guys?
I think image is a good way to express your feelings. There are some things like tattoos and the way you dress that help you show so many things and your interior. For us, the image we show to the audience is one of the elements we can use to create deep meanings in our fans’ minds

Talking about that, Do you feel like a Sex Symbol for your female audience?
The truth is that some media have showed me like that, I see it as something fun though…for that we have Leonardo Di Caprio. I’m a musician and that’s all that I need.

What does the word “Latin America” mean to you?
In Europe, the media is always selling an image about Latin America that is very dubious and stereotyped. However, I have friends that have gone there and they have found it very interesting. And, I don’t know if it’s going to sound like a cliché, Latin American audience is well known for being very emotional, I would like to play there and of course to perform in your country.
