Long is the distance but with a close conversation. We talk with Lauri, from The Rasmus, in his house in Helsinki and we knew a bit more about this mysterious guy who has so much to reveal.
Your fist single is called “No Fear” but what are you afraid of?
Basically, I think I’m afraid of myself. Being part of a band and being in the middle of this madness, it’s something difficult to hold on. I hope to be able to resist to all the temptations around me ’cause I would love to keep doing my music for many more years.
What does this new album mean for The Rasmus?
This album has a better production ’cause it’s our sixth. I wrote all the songs during the tour for the previous album, that last two and a half years. For me, all those songs are like a diary of every moment I lived. I used to write all the time in my black notebook some lines about anything or little poems that came to my mind.
What’s your favorite song of “Hide From The Sun”?
Immortal, it was the first song I wrote for this album. We recorded it a year before than the other songs and it gave us the guideline for the rest of the music. This song is like the heart of the album for me.
When you came to our country (Mexico) you had an unbelievable success, after experiment that, what does Mexico mean for you?
Plenty memories! A couple of hours ago I was listening the recording of México’s gig. And although I felt we didn’t play like we wanted to, the people response was amazing. You can hear all the shouting and sometimes you can hardly listen to the music. During the two concerts we could see people are really devoted. Plus, we had free time, we were able to visit many places and meet so much people. We went to Teotihuacán’s pyramids and we had the chance to be in an aboriginal ritual…Those were the best weeks of the whole year!!
Have you planned to visit Mexico soon?
In this moment, the plan is finish the tour in Europe and in the beginnings of the next year, start our world tour, but we’re still working on the dates. I’ve seen in our website that Mexican people is looking forward to see us again.
Would you like to record a song in Spanish?
Ahhh! (He didn’t say anything just stay thinking) Maybe I could say something in Spanish because my Spanish is pretty bad.
Did you meet Mexican girls when you were here? What do you think about them?
Mexican girls are really friendly. Scandinavian girls are the opposite. Here, in Finland, people are shy and reserved. In Mexico the physical contact is always present. That’s good!
What movie do you think describes better your life?
Actually, I’ve wrote a song about it. Dancer In The Dark, I identify myself with the principal character. It’s about a woman who’s getting blind, but even so she keeps the secret because she doesn’t want to bother everyone with her problems. I think I always do that. It’s a heart-rending movie.
Which song puts you in good mood?
Well, I have this song I used to listen too much. It always was in my discman and in my clock, and for about three years I wake up with it. It’s called Wake Up, it’s from this English band called Boo Radleys.
What makes you laugh?
The weird sense of humor I have with my friends. We have like a secret language between us, full of words we’ve invented. I love being with them; in fact, this is the last interview and then I’ll meet them. It has been a long time since I the last time I stayed in Helsinki and I’m excited for being here now.
What makes you feel happy for being alive?
I’ve had the opportunity to travel around the world due to the previous album’s tour, and I really haven’t the idea of how great is the world. Finland is one of the smaller countries in the whole world, and I’ve lived here all my life… we’re like HOBBITS. When you come out and visit 30 countries, and you see that each one has a unique culture, you get surprised. We have an amazing planet and wonderful people.
What does hell mean for you?
I think the thing I can’t stand the most is people having prejudices about me. They think they know how I am without really knowing me first. It’s so difficult to make friends and meet new people because most of this ambience is false. I met my best friend when I was 15 and after that, I haven’t met someone so important like him. It’s hard for me to be open with people and that makes me feel sad sometimes. I’m a bit paranoid as well, that’s why, in some way, I have some kind of shell that gets stronger every day.
The most romantic moment you have lived?
I think it was nocturnal scuba-diving with someone really special.
If you reincarnate in an animal, what would it be?
I would be a cat, to live 9 times.
Before you go in stage, what goes through your mind?
I tried to not think about anything. I search for place where I can be alone for a couple of minutes and escape from the world with my guitar. I always try to give the best of myself in stage, sometimes, if I’ve had a stressful day, it’s hard for me to concentrate.
NOTE:
We are separated for many kilometers, but it’s amazing to talk with such a sensible guy as Lauri. It’s a shame we had to hang up the phone, but we hope to have them here soon to promote their new album “Hide From The Sun”.
