Two years ago the Fins of The Rasmus appeared out of nowhere. Everybody screamed on the ‘ooh oh ooh oh’ of In The Shadows and their album Dead Letters flew out of the counters everywhre. Since then, they kept on performing. Sill has frontman Lauri found the time to write a naw album: Hide From The Sun.
Interviewer: You guys must have had 2 crazy years…
Lauri: You can tell me that. With Dead Letters we just kept on conquering new countries. At the beginning of this year we were still on tour in Japan. When there I got another question about In The Shadows, I almost got crazy. This was the signal to going back home and into the studio. The new songs aren’t as dark as those on Dead Letters. Now we are playing more between the contrasts of dark and light, between soft melodies and dark lyrics.
“I was intolerable”
Interviewer: How come that your previous album was darker?
Lauri: We came out of a very dark period. Everything just started as a dream: we were 16 and our debutalbum did it so well, that I didn’t need to go to school anymore. I could live as a rockstar. Imagine, you’re 17 and for the 1st time in your life, girls are calling YOU up! (grins) And everthing we asked for, we got it immidiatly. Especialy booze. We lived in a dreamworld and suddenly, with our 3rd album – that didn’t do very well – everything looked very bad for the group. When I looked around, in search of friends for comfort, I noticed that I had chased everybody away, because I had acted as an intolerable superstar. Therefore those dark thoughts, but we’ve learned from it and now were back with our feet on the ground.
Interviewer: Touring, directly back into the studio and later on, again on tour. Do you still have time for yourself?
Lauri: That’s totally not neccessary. Being non-stop occupied with the band, that’s who I am. At school, music was the only thing I was intrested at. I didn’t pay any attention on what they were trying to learn me. If I just had paid more attention! Now I regret that and I try to teach myself by reading a lot. At the moment I can’t get enough about history. Especially Finnish history, where facts and myths are running through each other. That makes it always more interesting (laughs).
