1 The Rasmus
Finland’s Europop goth-urchins go supernova
The overwelming sucess of The Rasmus in 2004 was simply the result of fitting s plush new frame onto an old, classic print back in 1987,two rock bands ruled the charts Bon Jovi from the US and Europe from Sweden.
People liked their music because it was accesible and non threating: the accetable, kids TV face of old school rock. It’s suprising that more bands haven’t trodden that line similary well since then.Though lacking in orignalilty we should still take our hats off to The Rasmus.
This year the finish band got it excatly right. You can’t even accuse them of being some sort of overnight coporate entity. Breakthrough albun “Dead Letters” is there fifth and like lead single “In The Shadows” it turned out to be a runnaway sucess.Led by impish frontman Lauri Ylönen, The Rasmus have being working twords this for years, and thoroughly deserve the fruits of their labour.
A picture perfect production allows Ylönen to punch out each crisp and cunning melody to maximum effect. “First day of my life” “Guilty” and “f-f-f- falling” are glossy and instanly resonant with memory tickling designer label hooks. Power ballads “Still Standing and Time to Burn” are no less purposeful. “In The Shadows” is fiendishly clever bringing in the tinest hint of Linkin Park and the smallest trace of HIM, but lets face it: that chours could have come straight from any early Bon Jovi album.
The summer did not end as well as it started for The Rasmu. Their set at reading was quickly aborted beneath a hail of abuse and bottles. However their overwelming comercial success throughout Europe will ensure they remain major players in 2005.

10 The Rasmus

Despite having ben bottled off the stage at Reading Festival someone out there must love The Rasmus with quality impressively dark maldoic rock gems like “In The Shadows” under their belts life can only get better for there finnish dark wavers better than being pelted with mud anyway!
