We went to Wien to see the finnish band preformering and interviewing them before their trip in Spain. There we found out that they keep enjoying like the first day on stage, altough each of them has a different personality.
It is 4 PM when we get to Gasometer, some old deposits of gas were turning into a room… outside of Wien.
The Rasmus fans are already queueing. We raffle the large group of fans who are saving their places patiencly, equipped with food and drinks and with more hopes than real chances- in the back side of the building- to have a look (or maybe more) on their idols, 4 finnish boys who had started as a little group in school and finished being the developed band of the year.
Their joy will end in a hole because the band is already inside the building. The truth is that Lauri, Aki, Pauli and Eero are there since they arrived in their tourbus from Munich. not everything is shinning in the Rock’N'Roll world, people. There are lot’s of driving hours, sleeping nigths in the tourbus, seting up equipment, soundchecks…and there is even horror! Journalists like flies, who become into their shadows during a concert day.
When we get into the backstage of the Gasometer, we found some folding beds destroyed in the camerino a lot of humid towels on the floor of the bathroom…All seems to be that the night in the bus was moved crazy and that they have just get the “siesta”. The camerin is so ascetic that it seems deign of Santa Teresa. No flowers, no drinkings, no socks, no carpets of extravagant colors, no tables of ping-pong, nothing of that “divas” requirements that the history of pop is filled.
We catch all the group eating. At firts sight, nothing is different from the others. All of them are Rasmus clones. Sound technical personel, drivers with the same dress-code that the group. Black clothes, vests of Gothic groups…all less a dissident. The bassist of the group, Eero that shines a few simple cowherds, white vest and a hanger of an Indian guru And is the “calm man” of The Rasmus, is a fanatic of the yoga…and of the surf because the first thing that he asks us on having known that we are of MTV in Spain is:
Eero: I am thinking of going to Spain for Vacations when the tour finish, in the Balearics there are waves to surf?
Eh…man, waves, many…are not.
Since he seems to be disappointed by the response we have to find a solution… quickly!
There is another site, Tarifa. There are good waves.
Aki: Tenerife?
Also, but Tarifa in the Peninsula. And so much to speak about the vacations.
Already are you dreaming of them?
Pauli: man…we been in tour almost a year…And the one that we did before this…
Aki: And before in Finland. The Rasmus is a group of play live. We always played very much…I believe that we must have played in more of thousand concerts.
It finished the rest for the food and around us it starts a frantic activity. The team returns to the room of the concert to finnish mounting the equipment and Pauli, the guitarrist, leaves with them to give the last adjustments before the sound test. They remain Lauri, the singer, Aki, the drummer and Eero.
Lauri: Yes. There are many people who thinks that The Rasmus is a new group, but the truth is that we have together almost 10 years…and released five discs.
Yes. We are going to get through your history a little bit. You began to play together in the Institute, right?
Lauri: Yes. We form a group Pauli, Eero and I when we were going together to college. Then Aki gets in.
You selled merchandise of the group, didn’t you?
Aki: But (clarifies rapidly) we met each other from before. I was playing in another group…they already knew how I play.
And you started recording in an independent stamp, right?
Eero: Yes. And the group was working well in Finland.
With your previous disc already you started sounding in Europe and this one has been the hit with In The Shadows and then with Guilty.
Lauri: Yes. It has been like a dream come true. It is something we always have dream. To play in different countries. It is an incredible experience…and the thing do not stop growing. We are a bit overwhelmed.
And how you keep your feet on the ground with such excitment?
Aki: ok, actually we still keep feeling like 4 boys who enjoy playing together. if we would lose it, it won’t be worthy anymore. We keep enjoying geting on stage the 4 of us.
Lauri: yes, and I don’t think I would stand being in those kind of group who meet just for recording, and don’t get along even for that. The beauty in this is that it’s an hobby which has become a job.
Yes, everything’s very harmonic, but don’t tell me that with all this tour, the press and everything, you don’t have bad momentes between you.
Aki: (maliciously) well…we decided for this tour not to give interviews. Just for you. I don’t know if taking it as a compliment.
Lauri: sure there are argues. There is a big presure and there are many the times when we are exhausted that we figth. But I think it is a part of it, you learn as you go. Today you are up and suddenly you are totaly drowned, one day you get out of the concert all happy because it went all great and the other day you get out depressed cause it went awful.
