Interview with Pauli [Turkey]

Selin: The Rasmus has become popular with the song “in the shadows”. How would you describe your life before and after this song became a hit?
Pauli: before the success of “In The Shadows” we were a well known band in Finland. We knew what it was like to be famous. The real difference for us now is that we travel much more and get to see new places, like Turkey! This is great for us!

Selin: after the success of “In The Shadows”, are you afraid of being remembered and thought of as a “one-hit wonder” band?
Pauli: no. We have been working for 10 years now, and the most important thing is that we will continue. We want to make even better music.

Selin: do you now feel like you’ve become a “star”?
Pauli: sometimes yes, but we are people who keep our feet on the ground and we generally don’t behave like stars!

Selin: the rasmus became famous around the world all at once. Is there a secret for your success?

Pauli: I don’t think so. We just made our music, and continued being ourselves.

Selin: when did you first realise that The Rasmus was a strong and lasting band? For example after an album, or special concert…..
Pauli: I think after our third album. We had had difficult times and we had difficult decisions to make. During this time we felt stronger than ever.

Selin: what is a major difference between your first and last albums?
Pauli: when our first album was released we were very young (15,16 years old). We were just having youthful fun! Now we know what we are doing, and how to do it better!

Selin: okay, how would you describe the essence of your improved style of music?
Pauli: music must be able to give hope and happiness, and join the people who listen to it together. I think we are succeeding with this!

Selin: on the “Dead Letters” album, every song is a story. Which one is the most important for you?
Pauli: each one is a personal story, and they are all important.

Selin: when you first began making music, who were you influenced by?

Pauli: metallica, guns ‘n roses, cypress hill…besides these we were also influenced by other music styles and songs that we liked.

Selin: do you remember the first album you ever bought?
Pauli: it was probably metallica or extreme.

Selin: Pauli, answer this openly and honestly…the years are passing. What do you picture for yourself in the future:
a: married, kids, expensive car, a father who joins in on weekend shopping.
b: someone who keeps count of all the girlfriends he’s had and women he’s slept with, and still continues in this way: the rock star life style.
c: someone who is still making music, still popular, and still a rasmus member.
d: or something else…?

Pauli: a good wife and kids, and still someone making music as a Rasmus member.

Selin: do you have superstitious beliefs?

Pauli: maybe… I like mystic things. I need to think a bit about this…

Selin: what do you do before you go on stage?
Pauli: I go to a quiet restful place and find peace.

Selin: many times you’ve been on stage with other bands. Which one stayed in your mind the most, and who would you like to appear with?
Pauli: red hot chilli peppers. We are planning to appear with some guys, and it is definitely going to happen!

Selin: which has been the most enjoyable festival you’ve performed in?
Pauli: this is difficult to answer, but lately I think it was in madrid: plata de toros!

Selin: do you remember the first time you got drunk?
Pauli: yes! It was with my brother and friend on a camp.

Selin: these days what have you been listening to most?
Pauli: the miseducation of lauryn hill/lauryn hill and old metallica albums.

Selin: who is on your “best of all time” list?
Pauli: stanislav lem, al pacino and the beatles.

Selin: what is your most embarrassing moment?
Pauli: there are so many…

Selin: have you ever been in prison?
Pauli: no!

Selin: if your life was a film, what songs would you have in the soundtrack?
Pauli: I think, probably a compilation of songs from the 80′s.
