Finnish pie [Canada]

The Rasmus come back a second time in 6 months, with his pop, heavy rock and gothic mix.
It is a true love story who is writing between the Québec and The Rasmus: in Canada, 88% of the 50 000 copies of the Dead Letters album have been bought in the Belle Province, wich makes of it the most important market in North America. We won’t astonish ourselves of the fact that the Finnish come back in the country for a second time in less than 6 months, adding the old capital in their visits.
At the other side of the wire, Lauri Ylönen’s voice is lazy, almost extinct. His accent, from the cold countries, is broken, like if every english word jumped in his mouth before to make its way to the phone. The Rasmus singer doesn’t hide it: he is exhausted. The London show of his group has been an excuse to party and the trip after, to Belfast, has not been resting. But same if his eyes want to close, Lauri is not less generous and take fun to play the questions game, in particular when the time comes to analyze this friendship between his group and Québec people.
I think that the Europe find a particular echo in Québec and the medias are may be more sensitive to what we do. It is cool, because we appreciate this part of Canada more than the others. We find similarities with Helsinki, in particular with the architect structure. We feel like at home!

Universal melody
When Lauri, Pauli Rantasalmi (guitars) and Eero Heinonen decided to give up school with another mate – who let his place to Aki Hakala (drums) -, 10 years ago, it was to travel around the world with their music. They didn’t expect that their creations could bring them to Japan or in America, but they were persuaded of one thing: no way to follow the musical model of their home country. They wished to do universal songs, sung in Shakespeare language. Still today, it is what is the most important, same if, in their adventures, the boys allowed theirselves some humoristic songs in their maternal language and that Lauri must use a dictionnary to translate the lyrics he writes in finnish.
It was hard, all the groups almost did the same thing in Helsinki and they were not able to have success outside of the country, tells the singer. Things have changed but Finland population is around 5,5 millions of people and after have done around 20 gigs, the tour is over. It is for this reason that we wondered what we would do after…
After skate punk albums, The Rasmus made his sound heavier and made darker his atmospheres, the result is a hard melodic rock sometimes gothic, who works very well: in the old countries, Dead Letters, 5th album of the group, has been sold in 1,5 million of copies.
The leader doesn’t hesitate to qualify this album as a concept. This disk joins together dead letters who, like the band say on the pocket’s back, have not been delivered to the person tho whom it was written and who cannot be returned to the person who wrote it.
I began to write these songs where I shared my serious and dark feelings and I found this word, “dead letter”, in the dictionnary and it corresponded exactly to what I’ve written, tells the singer. It could be to ask forgiveness, to ask for help, a confession, etc. May be I am a loser, a person who can’t say the things in front of another one, but it is like this way that I could say these things…

Surf on the wave
Now that they’re on the top, The Rasmus know that a new challenge wait them: to last. This is why they give all what they can to succeed their international breakthrough and of this way, make unpatiently wait the fans for their next record.
We are conscious to have a temporary job, commented Lauri. But this is also what that make this job very interesting. “Dead Letters” was the most important album of our career when we did it, now it will be the next who will get this statute…
Lauri predicts that the next album will be full of contrsts, with very beautiful moments and heavier parts. Six demos would be achieved and 15 other would be in preparation, but, of course, no way to pass too quickly the steps. What counts the most actually is to go meet the public. As the singer says, people who came in the metropolis to see The Rasmus at their last visit, in spring, will have a different performance tomorrow, at the Capitole. Putting the importance on the repertory, the band have fun to vary the pleasures. Even an acoustic part could be included, if they arrive to bring with them all the material they need.
We will continue the tour until December, after we’ll take a deserved break for Christmas time, says Lauri. We’ll be back on the road at the beginning of the year and then, it will be a visit in studio. I hope that we will can release the next album for spring, if not, it will be for this automn.
