The four fin guys from The Rasmus has not only conquer us with their music and lyrics, also Lauri hymself has stolen our heart, with that sensibility, angelical looks and proximity to their fans. Luxurious music from a unprecedented band that is leaving deep footsteps there were they walk.
Since the apparition of “Dead Latters”, this nordic band has became one of the most important one in dark-rock, without diffenence among their crowd of fans. A style created by themselves, between heavy metal and melodic from the 80′s, that has fitted perfectly in each corner of Europe, Japan and U.S.A.. Lauri and his band, after 12 years of unknow existance in the european music market, has finally taken their dark stetics and melancholic but energic voice all over the world.
A history of changes
Its sorpraising to know that this guys have been compared to bands like metallica and Bon Jovi. Though, if we take a look back till the begining of The Rasmus (9 years ago) we’ll see that when it comes to their style, this guys have an image in constant transformation.
In fact, when “playboys was first released on the streets -they were already considered as one of the most important bands of the new hard rock with their bebut album, “Peep”, They not only got a second gold disc and the clamed finish EMMA to the best new band, they also supported hard rock bands like: Red Hot Chili Peppers, Garbage, and Rancid arround all the nodic land. “Hell of a Tester” was their 3rd album, which included the single “Liquid” that was voted as best single of the year by the public and the media. It was in the year 2001, when the band signed a contract with Playground Music (Sweden) and got back into the music scene with a new single “F-f-f-falling”. The sinlge went 1st at the charts again and also got a platinum disc. “Into” was released a few months after and went double platinum. This was the opportunity to go into the european market to promote their album supporting bands like: Roxette,HIM and Dover, whith which they became friends. back in Finland, The Rasmus got the most important EMMA awards: Best Band, Best Single, Bets Rock/pop Band and Album of the Year. Time passed and the band has been searching for it’s identity, it started to try a more melodic sound.”aftre a difficuklt period in my life I began to write more dark and sad, but also energic songs and at the same time more intimate” sais Lauri that tries to avoid comparisons with Bon Jovi “they use to compear us, but we are nothing alike.our first influences were bands like Guns ‘n’ Roses and Motley Cure, Whereas I never liked Bon jovi’s music. after that we open to things like Metallica and RHCP”.
Quality components
It’s not strange that, after so many deserve hits in their homeland, they wanted to share their music with the rest of the world, after all it would have been unfair to be able to enjoy it only in the north of europe. It was clear the having such componets this band needed to share it’s music with the world.
Lauri: Vocalist with a vice full of fire and beauty. Its consideredone of finland’s best music composers. “My lyrics are always personal. Each world has a special meaning for me and remainds me of things in my past”.
Pauli: The guitar player. a gifted musician and a great producer. He was nominated to an EMMA award as Best producer once. He is the responsable for the success of bands like killers and Kwan. “The best advice is “if you have the knowleagde sheare it”.
Aky: The drummer. Aki joined the band in 1999. Before that, he was selling The Rasmus merchandise at their shows. “Pauli asked me to join after we had jammed together. Which is great, because I pretty much suck in everything else but playing the drums”.
Eero:who is definitely the calmest man in the band, plays the bass. He finds his strength in meditation and music. “Sahaja yoga gives me a peace of mind”, the soulful bass player explains.
At the top with “DeadLetters”
That the name of their new album, wich includes the single “In the Shadows”. An album as perfect as catchy. Exquisit lyrics in ecah of the songs, which easily get you to emotional extasis. each song is written by Lauri hymself “Each song is a letter to somebody. It could be an apology, confession or cry out for help”. as a curiuos tip Lauri was forces to smoke twiece as much during the recording of this album to get his voice rough enough. thogh their style is still rock, all their songs have a catchy corous, its a work with great deept, witha mixture of raw sonud but at the same time warm. “It’s always hard to define what you do, but to someone that listened to us i would say that we play rock with much energy, melody, a powerful vice and also with a deep, dark, melanchollic touch. This album ha the most sad and personal songs we have ever written. That why the title”. That’s what the name talks about, a dead letter is a letter that has never been delivered because the person to who it was written can not be found, and it also can not be returned to the person who wrote it”. This album come loaded with rock and pop but also with some clear goth touches, the same ones that were famous in the 80′s, with painted faces and dark clothes. a sweet style mixed with electricity and dark pasages. An inheretance of alternative rock that joined to comercial rock create an unique and tottaly personal style.
Quotes: “The album is darker, moodier and dreamier than anything we have done before” Eero (bass), “We want to get to the USA being as Finnish as posible. Even though they don’t even know were Finland is” Aki.
