Rock band from Finland [Malaysia]

Unless you were into metal bands like HIM and Nightwish, you probably didn’t know they made rock bands in Finland. The Rasmus are in the middle of mind-altering perception – the group has scored a big hit with the song In The Shadows enjoying regular airplay on radio stations here and across the planet. The group has been poised to be the first big export from Finland to the USA, having already conquered the charts in UK and most of Europe. The band, consisting of lead singer Lauri Ylönen, bass player Eero Heinonen, guitarist Pauli Rantasalmi and drummer Aki Hakala, was in town to promote its current best-selling album, Dead Letters, and we made sure we had a chat with its singer, Ylönen.

Klue: The video for “In The Shadows” has supernatural overtones – you guys have any experiences of your own in that department?
Lauri: I think the life we all live in now is really fast and hectic; we’re all living at a pace that is disorienting, stressful and hard to grasp. I think sometimes because of this, the way we perceive the world may get altered and we end up experiencing things that may be supernatural. So I don’t think we have had anything supernatural that nobody else has had to go through.

Klue: Oh, okay. The band’s music has a lot of sad vibes. Are you guys really bummed-out people?
Lauri: I think there’s a spark of hope in all our songs. WE sing about mainly dark and melancholic things because we want to encourage people to address their issues and be able to come to a decision to move on with their lives.

Klue: I’ve heard you guys will be collaborating with someone from your home country in the future. Is this true?
Lauri: Yes, it is. We’ll hopefully be doing something with Apocalyptica, this bunch of cello players who love metal and play their instruments in unconventional ways. It should be cool.

Klue: You guys are in town for quite a few days and have even gone clubbing in KL. How do you find the local chicks here?
Lauri: I really like their style here – they just take you by the hand and go, “you’re coming with me.” It’s great! Malaysian women are awesome.
