Finnish goth sensations tick over in London [UK]

SIX- THIRTY PM is a preposterous time to be rocking out, but its to Happylife’s credit that their energetic, hook driven rock ‘n’ rollgets so many arses shaking, particulary when they tear into barnstorming forthcoming single “silence when your burning.” However despite their best efforts they were never going to me more than a momentary distraction, for something finnish this way comes…
“Esoteric” is not the kind of word that’d usually get attached to a band experiencing meteoric success such as this. But unless you;re one of the many squealing, panda eyed young ladies packing out the astoria, you’ll be pretty hard pushed to see exactly what The Rasmus’ appeal is. Playing mainly tunes from their breakthrough album “Dead letters” record, this is a slick rock show, and for the gathered faithful theres not a lot to complain about. Still standing incites a shrill sing along, and “in the shadows” predictably gets a large portion of the crowd bouncing. But when the most intriguing thing about a band is a cover of Bjorks “play dead” its not the mark of a band capable of making maves in the big league.
The Rasmus are by no means shit. Shit does not sell out venues like this two nights running. What they are however, is dull. Lauri “magpie hair” Ylönen does not possess the confident swagger of a man capable of inspiring such devotion. He’s by no means a rock star in the conventional sense. He has little onsatge charisma, and in certain light looks alarmingly like Jimmy Crankie.
Likewise their music, while not terrible, is sexless Goth-lite pop bereft of any endearing spark – and if they want to maintain or improve on their current status they’ll have toi try much harder than this in the future.
