The Rasmus Mystery [Canada]

Ah Québec, unsoundable Québec, cradle of so many musical mysteries, when will you stop to astonish us? After the unexpected triumphs of Shawn Phillips and Sarah Brightman, here is the last: an old group of young Finnish rockers, superstars in their home country but virtually unknown of this side of the Atlantic, called The Rasmus.
In the United States, their hit “In the Shadows” has not played yet in radios; in english Canada, we wonder what to do with this thing. Here, Musique Plus and all commercial musical radios have quickly seized the song. Go understand.
Last Monday evening, the downtown was desert. Even the punks have not monopolized the pavement on St. Catherine street, it is to tell you how there was nothing happening. Really nothing? At 12 AM, there was ever young people to make a waiting queue in front of the Club Soda. At 4 PM, it was going up to St. Laurent bld and St Catherine street corner. At the door opening, the same queue extended up to in front of the Foufs.
What makes move the crowd? The Rasmus, rock band, conventional and radiophonic: a little bit heavy on guitars, very pop in choruses. Bryan Adams voice, european guitars, Bon Jovi songs, here is, shortly resumed, what is The Rasmus. And God, it works : noting sales numbers very interesting since their first album all in english release, “Dead Letters”, 8 500 copies in 3 weeks (8.000 in Québec only), we have announced in catastrophe a gig 10 days ago. The tickets have been sold out in a few days only.
Encouraged by the enthusiasm of their new Québec fans, the quartet has come on the stage a little bit in late, around 9h45 PM. But at the moment that the musicians walked on the stage, a powerful scary scream came out from the assistance. A lot of young girls, a few amongst them were with a little Finland flag to welcome the new stars. The same energy stilled in the vocal cords of the fans, from the first to the last note of the show.
It would be not fair to qualify The Rasmus as a new boys band disposable after use. After all, the seed of success has been planted in Finland 10 years ago. (The boys are 25 years old in average!) and their success has not been built on a cards castle. Apparently adulated in their home country, known in the rest of the Europe (it seems that Italy love them a lot), it remains to conquer the big american market. So it is by Montreal that the group begins his classic rock invasion.
It was also their first stay in America, a stay that they great started in a over excited Club Soda. The public energy went back on The Rasmus, who gave a more than honest gig, whitout electronic sequences everywhere in their rock songs. Although the fans would have taken more than these 75 minutes, the group showed experiment on stage and the singer is not whitout charisma. Going essentially trough “Dead Letters” material, the group risked itself to play some less known titles from their albums before. And a remake of…”Play Dead” from Björk! We ever announce their return for September.
While this time, we still wondering…
