Interview with Lauri [UK]

The Rasmus
With a top 5 single under their collective belts, frontman Lauri Ylönen and his Finnish rockers the Rasmus prepare to step out of the shadows with a handful of uk dates. Prepare then for Björk covers in an 80s hard rock style…

What can we expect from the shows?
Lauri: “you can expect a full energy performance but it isn’t all one pace. Sometimes its quieter-quite down and mellow; it’s a good mix I think. We’ll be playing a lot of songs from the new album but there are only 10 songs on there so we will be playing the older stuff as well. I don’t know how people will react to the songs they don’t know, but personally I like to hear new material when I go and see a band. We’ll probably have a few covers ready as well – play dead by Björk should be one.”

Are people surprised to find out you’ve actually got more than one album?
Lauri: “well over here in the uk of course a lot of people only know us from the single (In the shadows) that’s fine but we’ve been going a lot longer and even the new album is getting old for us. It was released in Finland a year ago and we’re moving onto the next one. Its best not to stand still – I live for tomorrow as much as today.”

How representative of the band is “ITS”?
Lauri: “it’s a different song foe us, it’s a bit of a crossover thing with almost a disco beat in the background. It sounds fresh and quite different to some of the others that are closer to ’80s hard rock.”

In the UK we do, of course, consider ourselves the centre of the universe. How important was it to break the band here?
Lauri: “well on one hand, if people don’t know us in one place I don’t really care. We’ve worked hard to make it happen elsewhere and had quite a lot of success. But at the same time it’s a different achievement to make it in the UK. I’ve always thought it was difficult to break because you have a lot more bands there already and all the media are there. It was a little scary for us to be honest, but people are starting to discover us. We haven’t made it yet – we’re just a bunch of guys from Finland at this point with a single that some people like, but that’s defiantly a platform to work from.”
