“Dead Letters” review [UK]

The Rasmus: Dead Letters
Paul Taylor
IF ever there is a heavy metal version of the Eurovision song contest, Finland’s The Rasmus will come into their own. Perky grunge may seem a contradiction in terms, but somehow this band manages to hitch great, accessible tunes to massive swathes of guitar, that single In The Shadows providing a very convincing calling card.
The lesson of the success of bands such as Evanescence is that you can have melody while you mosh. In addition, no-one wanting to shift units comparable with The Darkness is going to ignore the appeal of classic rock values.
The days of unremittingly doomy atonal rock seem numbered. Dead Letters is packed with muscular melody.
In The Shadows is not even the best track. That honour goes to the gothically silly yet glorious Time To Burn.
