Finnish rock minstrels aim to rescue youth from pop’s jaws [UK]

“POP MUSIC is poisoning young people’s minds,” delcares The Rasmus’ frontman Lauri. “Not to worry, though. We’re going to change them.” If that sounds arrogant, consider the fact that The Rasmus (a “meaningless Finnish-sounding name with attitude”) have already changed enough minds to go multi-platinum in their native Finland. “It’s never been easy for us. We had to fight our way to get here,” says the singer, referring to his adolescent struggles to stay rock in jock-infested schools overcrowded with fans of sugar-coated pop. “That stuff doesn’t last,”He says. “That we’re here just shows that rock’n'roll is so much stronger.” Much like their native counterparts HIM, the vocalist- alongside guitarist Pauli, bassist Eero and drummer Aki- wallow in a dark, highly infectious sound. One that landed them coveted support slots with Rancid and the Red Hot Chili Peppers. “They’ve always been our idols, so I had a hard time believing they were flesh and blood,” he sighs.” We were really scared at the thought of hanging out with them.” But hang they did, although it took more gigs and chart-topping success in Europe to make it sink in. “I was walking though the streets of Camden one day, and Tim Armstrong from Rancid was on the other side of the street shouting my name!” he laughs.” Time Armstrong…calling out my name?
