In the Netherlands we walk behind sometimes. There is already an enormous cool band walking around in Finland and we find out they exist after their 6th cd! But luckyly whole of the Netherlands know them now after their great hit “In the shadows”. The Finns where recenlty in the Netherlands for concerts and Top of the Pops Magazine talked with guitarist Pauli and bassist Eero.
The two are sitting relaxed in a small hall above “The Melkweg” in Amsterdam. They look out of a window to all the fans waiting to catch a glimp of their idols. They don’t realise they only have to look up for that!
You have had a different teenagetime then the most of us, because you were already famous at the age of 17. How was that?
Pauli: “Well, Lauri and I eventually even stopt with school, cause we were so busy with making music! So if others had to get up early to go to school of their work, we could still sleep. They only thing I had to do in the day was playing guitar. It was raelly ‘freaky’ to be so famous so young. Luckyly we had a group of good people around us, so we didn’t start with the wrong Labelrecords.”
Eero: “Exept that one then….”
Pauli: “Oh yes, that one”
What one?
Eero: “Hmm….we don’t want to talk about that anymore, haha!”
Pauli: “Luckyly our friend are supporting us really much. They still treat us like before we where famous. They are really honest and tell us what they think. At the moment we shout: ‘Yo I am a rockstar dude!’, they say: ‘Fuck you man, you are not a rockstar’.
What is the most stupid thing you can do as young and starting band?
Pauli: “The worst decision you can take is to split cause some kind of stupid argument. Then you are busy so long to make your dreams come true and then you give it all up.”
Have you ever had a moment you almost wanted to give up?
Pauli: ” Yes, when our last drummer wanted to quit the band, that was pretty tough. But we got thrue that good. Looking back to it we made the right decision not to give up but to go on I guess.”
How did your parents react when you quitted school?
Pauli: “Pretty good actually. They could imagine that this was the only thing I wanted, so I was lucky with that.”
Eero: “It was good none of our parents had some kind of a family-enterprise and expected us to follow them.”
Pauli: “So we are glad ou parents haven’t got a factory, haha!”
Can you still walk around in Finland?
Together: “Yes, of course!”
Eero: “When a fan sees us, they ask an autograph and leave. Like in Germany it is much busier, but still everyone runs to Lauri.”
Pauli: “In restaurants sometimes the boss askes if it’s really us and we get free dinner and drinks. We don’t mind those things haha.”
When you made In the shadows, did you feel it would be a special song?
Pauli: “Yes we did feel that by that song. We wrote it during a soundcheck. I was playing a riff and Eero and Aki also start to play with me, while Lauri was still eating. When he was finished, he came with the melody and we suddenly had a number. In a half an hour! We had the feeling it was someting mysterious, because it happend so fast and without thinking. We were just messing around and then you just have a supernumber.”
Is it true you watched horrormovies during the making of Dead Letters?
Pauli: “Yes, but we watched other movies too. We were in a hotel in Stockholm, cause we were taking the songs there. We were watching a lot of movies there because we had nothing else to do!”
Eero: “Do you know the horrormovie: The lion king?”
Yes, but isn’t that someting for little children?
Pauli: “We also watched movies like Lord Of The Rings and Hellraiser.”
Eero: “We love mysterios things that only call up questions, look at our videoclips.”
That probably was different when you just started as a band?
Eero: “Yes absolutely. We made more like happy skate-punk music.”
Do you still listen to your old cd’s?
Eero: “Yes, and then we laugh really loud, hahaha!”
Okay, at last. When is your next holiday?
Pauli: “First we are going to tour in Europe, then take up new songs and then to America!”
Eero: “So our next holiday will be in December…pffff…”
