Singer Lauri Ylönen-dossier [Germany]

Twenty-four-year old Lauri Ylönen is the lead singer of the successful Finnish rock band “The Rasmus.”

How would you describe your personality?
I think I’m quite an impulsive person and quite quiet. Maybe I’m kind of hard to get to know. That’s the way I am.

Lauri Ylönen is considered one of Finland’s best rock composers. Born in Helsinki on April 23, 1979, he started playing classical guitar and the piano at the age of five. In 1996, together with three friends, he founded the group “The Rasmus.” They’ve won all the important music awards in their native Finland, including several Finnish Grammys. The Rasmus topped the European charts for weeks with their single “In the Shadows.” Now the band’s getting ready for a world tour.
Ylönen’s favourite music: anything by the British rock trio, Muse.
His favourite book is J.R.R. Tolkien’s “Lord of the Rings,”
and his favourite food is liquorice.

What makes you happiest?
I enjoy being here right now playing tonight for these 3000 people. It’s something I always dreamt of.

What’s your secret passion?
I dunno…. drinking.

Who’s your personal hero?
I have a lot of heroes, but to name someone I would maybe say Björk – I’m a huge Björk fan. She’s a great artist and personality. She’s very interesting and she’s always done her own style… she’s real.

What’s important in a good friendship?
Friendship needs to be very honest and I feel like I have a lot of people that I know but only a few people who are very close to me. It’s kind of hard to get to know me – I don’t open up to everybody. I’m not that kind of person.

Who are you especially grateful to?
I’ll always be grateful for these guys in the band – they are like my second family. Without them I wouldn’t be here. We started almost 10 years ago together and we’re still doing well and are tight, and there’s a good feeling in the band. That’s the most important thing in my life right now.

Do you owe an apology to anyone?
I think I owe apologies to many people. But I think mostly I might have dismissed my friends back in Finland because we’ve been on tour for another 6 weeks, and I’m so busy all the time, and the life we’re living right now is so hectic. It’s hard to keep touch with friends back in Finland.

Do you have an unfulfilled ambition?
I’m a very ambitious guy and we now have great success in Germany and the rest of Europe. I feel like this is just the beginning for us.

What do you treasure most?
I just feel like I respect life as it is right now. Every day I discover new things, I live a very interesting life. Being in a band has become a kind of lifestyle for me, and I’m a very lucky guy to be here.
